The digital pathology workplace of the future
Pathology is undergoing a transformation. Diagnosing based on digitized samples and the use of artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly important. As a result, the way pathologists work is also fundamentally changing.
Human & AI in focus
As part of the AI-Path project, aisencia GmbH and the Digital Media Lab at the University of Bremen are joining forces to redefine how pathologists work in the digital age:
- Use of Explainable AI (xAI) for transparent and understandable AI-based diagnostic suggestions
- Creation of an ergonomic digital workplace – from laptop to virtual reality (VR)
- Testing of methods and mechanisms to prevent fatigue
The results will be tested in pilot laboratories and compared with the current, predominantly analog workflows. The goal is to significantly reduce the workload of pathologists and improve laboratory processes.
With our AI, more than 50 skin diseases can already be detected — covering around 80 percent of the daily cases in dermatopathology. Through close collaboration with leading experts and researchers, we aim to make this technology as user-friendly and practical as possible.

AI-PATH also fits seamlessly into the Innovation Strategy of the State of Bremen 2030, which promotes the use of key technologies such as AI in important future industries. By focusing on the interaction between humans and machines, the project highlights a central goal of Bremen’s AI strategy: to shape digitalization where it creates tangible added value — for medicine, research, and society.
